Why does building an author website become harder than writing the book?

I’m finding that creating an author website can feel surprisingly complicated after finishing a book. I keep getting stuck on what to include, how much information readers need, and how to keep the site easy to update. What problems did other authors face with a website builder for authors? I’d really like serious, honest advice about what caused the most trouble and what you’d do differently.
